Landguard’s Canine Code: Respect, Protect, Enjoy
Landguard Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Scheduled Monument, home to unique wildlife and delicate habitats. Ground-nesting birds, like the vulnerable ringed plover, rely on disturbance-free environments to successfully raise their young. As a dog-friendly site, we encourage responsible dog walking to ensure that both wildlife and visitors can enjoy the beauty of the reserve. By following our simple guidelines, you can help protect nature while making the most of your visit.

Responsible Dog Walking Guidelines
Dogs on a Lead
Free-roaming dogs can disturb nesting birds, causing them to abandon their eggs. Please keep dogs on a lead to prevent unintentional harm and remember – no dogs on the beach in front of the cordons from April 1st to September 30th.
Stay on Designated Paths
Avoid walking through cordoned areas, as these are vital safe zones for breeding birds. Always follow marked routes.
Respect Wildlife
Birds and other wildlife need space to feed and rest. If animals appear alert or distressed, please move further away to prevent unnecessary stress.
Be a Responsible Dog Owner
- Pick up after your dog – Dog fouling harms wildlife and public spaces. Please use waste bins provided.
- Observe designated dog zones – Some areas welcome dogs, while others remain dog-free to protect wildlife and ensure a peaceful experience for all visitors.
- Respect shared spaces – Keep dogs under control to allow everyone to enjoy the site safely and comfortably.
Follow Site Signage
Conservation efforts rely on visitor cooperation. Please adhere to all posted signs to protect wildlife and maintain the site’s integrity.
Be Considerate
Aggressive or passive-aggressive behaviour towards staff managing the site will not be tolerated. Respectful engagement ensures that Landguard remains a welcoming space for all.
Additional Guidance for Professional Dog Walkers & Multiple Dogs
- Walk multiple dogs on leads – Keeping dogs under control ensures safety for wildlife and other visitors.
- Monitor dog fouling – Walking dogs on leads allows for better observation and collection of waste, maintaining a cleaner environment for all.
- Consideration for others – Managing multiple dogs responsibly ensures that everyone—wildlife, walkers, and fellow dog owners—can enjoy the site peacefully.
