Everyone Welcome – Accessible Landguard

Useful information about site accessibility across Landguard Point in Felixstowe and its attractions.

Ensuring that every visitor is made to feel welcome at Landguard is really important to us. Across this extensive destination, the places we’d like everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy are however often accompanied by their own unique set of challenges, perhaps from being a Scheduled Monument for example, or a protected landscape Site of Special Scientific Interest.

From accessible boardwalks and café terraces to amplifiers on audio guides, clear signage and convenient public transport connections, we are on a journey to an ever-more accessible Landguard.

If you are combining your visit to Landguard Point with time in Felixstowe, along the seafront promenade and gardens or around the town, you may wish to download Visit Felixstowe’s Felixstowe Accessibility Guide.

Accessibility at LANDGUARD FORT

On arrival

  • Disabled visitors can be set down near the fort entrance.
  • There are two designated parking spaces, both located 10 metres from the entrance.
  • The fort provides free admission for carers (assisting companions of disabled members or visitors).

Inside the fort

Pathways and surfaces within the fort include gravel, grass, concrete and asphalt which may be slippery when wet.

Access to the ground floor levels of the fort is possible for those in wheelchairs – including the tunnels. Where ramps are not in place, please ask a member of staff for assistance as mobile ramps are available for most rooms.

24 of the 32 audio tour points are on the ground floor, including two video rooms.

Access to the first floor is by about 20 relatively shallow steps in five separate locations. One set of steps has a partial handrail only. If this is a problem please ask to be directed to a more suitable access point. Please note, there is no lift.

Other facilities

  • Portable toilets (including one accessible toilet) *
  • Assistance dogs welcome
  • Portable loop and amplifiers are available for the hard of hearing

*Further toilets are available at the Landguard Visitor Centre and View Point Cafe a short distance away.

Accessibility at FELIXSTOWE MUSEUM

Housed within the Ravelin Block of the neighbouring Landguard Fort, the building was once home to a submarine mining establishment. Felixstowe museum is all on ground floor. However, due to the age of the building some door access maybe restrictive.

The museum is managed by a team of friendly volunteers who are always happy to help.

We hope you enjoy your visit & come back again soon.

Accessibility at LANDGUARD NATURE RESERVE

Discover wonderful wildlife habitats, a beautiful sandy coast and a fascinating array of wartime built heritage on Landguard Nature Reserve by enjoying the accessible wide path and extensive boardwalk.

A wide concrete path extends from Manor Terrace at the southern end of Felixstowe seafront, right through the Reserve and is popular with visitors using mobility scooters as well as walkers and cyclists. It links to an accessible boardwalk which stretches all the way to the shoreline near the tip of the Reserve – Landguard Point.

The path also connects with close access to the Landguard Fort, Felixstowe Museum, the estuary viewing area as well as Landguard Point car parks and bus stops served by routes into Felixstowe.

Thank you for enjoying Landguard responsibly

Accessibility at LANDGUARD VIEW POINT

Landguard’s riverside viewing area is renowned for its amazing views of the Orwell Estuary across to Harwich and Shotley – and the Port of Felixstowe with its big ships and container-lifting cranes.

The viewing area is all on one level and adjacent to its car park where there are blue badge parking bays.

The View Point Café has both indoor and outdoor seating accessible from the car park. It is fully accessible with an accessible toilet.
