Cycling in and around Landguard Peninsula

Helping you find your way…

Landguard Point lies on National Cycle Network route 51. The open-to-all, signed route leads through Landguard Nature Reserve along a wide path that’s just perfect for cycling outings for all ages and pedaling abilities. It links the resort of Felixstowe with Landguard Fort, Felixstowe Museum and the Haven viewing area – all have ‘refuelling stations’ for coffee and cake!

The harbour foot passenger ferry also takes bikes across the River Orwell to Shotley and Harwich. What will you discover along the Landguard way?

Yes indeed – take your pick!

You can park your bike alongside your table at Felixstowe Museum’s Beehive Café (seasonal opening), or by the outside terrace tables at the View Point Café terrace where you can watch the big ships on the Haven.

If you are visiting Landguard Fort, there’s a café there too with outside seating.

Places to Refuel

There are plenty of places to lock up your bike at Landguard Point near the attractions and cafés.

Yes, the harbour ferry takes both foot passengers and bikes.

Capacity for bikes may be limited especially in high season, so to avoid disappointment, please always book all tickets for your journeys online in advance.

About the routes, paths & places

National Cycle Network route 51 joins Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket,  Ipswich, Felixstowe with Landguard. The route follows an easy-going, wide concrete path through Landguard Nature Reserve, to the fort, museum and View Point by the Haven. Here you can pop your bike on the foot-ferry to Harwich and continue on route 51 to Colchester!

Open to all, the Nature Reserve path is well suited to all cyclists, including those new to the activity. You can also park up and pedal out – it is accessible directly from Felixstowe’s Manor Terrace car park. You’ll find public toilets at both ends of the Landguard section and family and cyclist-friendly cafés at Manor Park and  Landguard View Point.

Why not cycle both sides of the water?

Get the bigger picture of the Haven and the historic military defences located on both sides of the Orwell estuary. Or cycle and explore the beautiful area of Suffolk & Essex Coasts & Heaths National Landscape on the Shotley Peninsula.

The Harwich Harbour Ferry takes both foot passengers and bicycles, crossing to Harwich town and Shotley marina. Head out by bike to explore both sides of the river for a day. What a great little adventure!
