Group & Educational visits at LANDGUARD FORT

Fortifications have existed at Landguard since the 16th century. The existing fort was built between 1745 and 1750 and significantly modified in the 1870’s. The visible remains present an unusually complete physical record of developments in military engineering, plus the response to perceived changes in coastal defence requirements over a period of more than 200 years.

Today, Landguard Fort delivers a fascinating insight into the nation’s coastal defences up to the beginning of the Cold War, and shares through displays, tours and reconstructed scenes how people lived and worked in the fort.

The Battle of Landguard – a guide for young people

The Second Anglo Dutch War took place between 1665 and 1667. It  was a race to form big trading empires. The English had declared war but by 1667 were losing following a surprise attack on the English Navy at Chatham. It was very likely the Dutch would come and attack the ships and shipyards in Harwich, but where would the Dutch land to attack Harwich..?

Landguard Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of its high wildlife conservation value, such as its rare, vegetated shingle habitat and importance to migrating birds.

Traces of the area’s WWII military history can also be found on the Reserve which makes for a fascinating contrast between military architecture and coastal nature site.

Guided tours with the Ranger are available with a number of options to accommodate specific interests as well as general interest, group size, age and mobility of participants etc.

These can be booked with the Ranger, on the contact details above.

Yes, talks about Landguard Nature Reserve and its conservation work are something we offer to local groups. These can take place on site at the Reserve or we may be able to join you at a local venue.
