The Gatekeeper, also known as the Hedge Brown, is a medium-sized butterfly with orange and brown coloration. They have a distinctive black spot near the wing tip, usually containing two tiny white dots.

Sea holly has a unique, spiny appearance with bluish-green leaves and thistle-like blue or violet flower heads. They favour sandy coastal sites.
