Walks in and around the Shotley Peninsula
Walking in National Landscape Shotley – an area of outstanding natural beauty
Just a short foot-ferry ride away from Felixstowe or Harwich, Shotley Gate on the Haven is an absolute go-to Suffolk destination for walkers and nature-lovers alike. With waymarked riverside trails, accessible routes, cycle rides and family-friendly walks and activities, from historic Shotley to dreamy Pin Mill and Alton Water Park, the Shotley Peninsula is a paths-less-travelled destination with something for everyone.
About the walks, paths & places
So what will it be? A riverside ramble along the Stour or Orwell? A stroll around Shotley’s bustling marina? A mindful walk touched by true-life stories of young naval lads, wartime heroes and U-boat surrenders.
Treasures await down every path around the Shotley Peninsula, from pews with idyllic views to the bird song of river-cliff woodlands, from waders on the tidal mudflats to historic barges at Pin Mill. There are accessible and buggy-friendly walks too.
The author of Swallows & Amazons fell in love with this neck of the Suffolk woods and rivers. Pin Mill was his place and his sailing grounds. Follow Arthur Ransome’s Walking Trail to share the magic.
