From the last opposed invasion of England in 1667, right through the centuries and two World Wars to the era of the Cold War, let our volunteer tour guides bring the life and times of the fort to life from musket balls to the nuclear bomb.

The fort’s team of friendly, knowledgeable volunteer tour guides offer a wide range of general and more specialised guided tours of the site, including tours which feature exclusive access to areas not otherwise open to the general public.
These include behind-the-scenes areas of the main fort, the roof top and specific outer defences of interest. Tours led by costumed characters may also be available. Evening ghost tours are operated outside the main season only.
For all of our guided tours, normal fort entry is covered by the ticket price.


How to book your guided tour of Landguard Fort
Please request your tour AT LEAST 3 DAYS IN ADVANCE of your visit
To avoid disappointment – even if you are planning to visit with just family and friends or even on your own – all places on fort guided tours must be arranged in advance, using our Tour Booking Enquiry Form. Guided tour prices include normal admission to the fort and are per person. Once you have requested your place on a guided tour, one of the team will contact you to confirm your booking.

The vibrant community of ‘Landguardians’ (volunteers) involved with the fort conjure up so many creative ideas to bring this historic monument to life throughout the year and make your experience different and special every time you visit… From spooky evening ghost tours to a range of full-blown Halloween events – some for the family, others for the fearless!- the volunteer teams make amazing events happen. Check out the special trails crafted for the little ones to enjoy in the school holidays, the historical re-enactment events which bring the place to life with colour, credible scenes and even gun fire!

Guided Fort Tour
A great way to experience the fort, find out more an have all those questions answered! Detailed tours of the fort are led by our expert volunteer tour guides who enjoy sharing their knowledge along with some fun to bring the fort and its stories to life for kids and adults of all ages. Explore the keeps, batteries, magazine tunnels and much, much more!
Approx. duration: 2 – 2.5 hours.

Outer Defences Tour
A unique opportunity to access outer defence areas not normally open to the general public and only accessible via a guided tour. Enjoy a fort tour which covers the keeps, magazines and tunnels and then extends beyond to explore the seaward and river-facing battery emplacements outside the fort. Visit the left battery to find out about ‘disappearing guns’. Step through sally ports, walk the moat to discover the mine pier waggon-way and enjoy external views of Darell’s Battery, the searchlight pill-boxes and more.

Roof Top Tour
Look forward to unforgettable panoramic views of the Haven, its estuaries and the Port of Felixstowe on a special guided tour which takes you off-limits and up to the fort rooftops. Enjoy a standard guided Fort Tour plus rare and exclusive access to the roof of Landguard Fort and its historic observation look-out building.

VIP Top Tour
For a fab day of exploration, why not book a VIP Tour of the fort to go behind the scenes with an expert fort guide, including up onto the roof top and into normally off-limits-to-the-general-public areas of the outer defences. Be sure to bring your binoculars to make the most of the views and look forward to some light refreshments at the fort too!

Ghost Tours
Will you dare to take a spooky dark evening tour of a fort that’s allegedly the most haunted place in Suffolk? What of Dr Viper and the lace handkerchief? Could there still be one last marine which patrols the fort a night? Hear tales misdeeds and ghostly goings-on that will send shivers down your spine even when you’ve wrapped up warm on a dark winter’s night!
Tours held on Thursday evenings from October to March only. Approx. duration: 1 hour. Minimum age 14 years. Sturdy footwear and suitable clothing advisable.
