Enjoy a unique opportunity to access ‘guided tour only’ outer defence areas not normally open to the public. Follow your guide on a fort tour of the keeps, magazines and tunnels which then extends beyond to explore the seaward and river-facing battery emplacements outside the fort. Head to the left battery which formerly housed the ‘disappearing guns’ and take in the gun pit, ammunition magazines and the crew ready room. Step through both sally ports to enjoy the external granite facade of the gun positions and the outside of the caponier. Walk along the moat to the waggon-way to the mine pier, for external views of Darell’s Battery, the engine house and the searchlight pill-boxes. Finally, the guide leads the way to the mining room where the tour finishes.
