Landguard Fort Proudly Joins the First Cold War National Heritage Week

The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension and ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, lasting from 1947 to 1991. It was characterized by a lack of direct military conflict between the two superpowers, but instead involved proxy wars, an arms race, and competition in various fields like space exploration. The core of the Cold War was a struggle for global dominance between capitalism and communism

Felixstowe, Suffolk – Landguard Fort is pleased to announce that we will be a participating site in the inaugural Cold War National Heritage Week, taking place from 16th – 23rd May 2025. This national initiative brings together historic locations across the UK to highlight Britain’s Cold War past through education, collaboration, and public engagement. The event will offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the impact of the Cold War on Britain and the hidden histories behind key defence sites.

Cold War National Heritage Week aims to bring history to life through expert-led tours, special exhibitions, and interactive experiences. By opening up historically significant Cold War-era sites, the event promotes a deeper understanding of the period, encouraging reflection on its lasting influence and the importance of preserving this history for future generations.

At Landguard Fort, visitors will gain insight into our Cold War role in Britain’s coastal defences through our Rooftop Tour experience. This guided tour provides a rare opportunity to explore the Seaward Defence Headquarters, built post-WWII to strengthen Britain’s naval defences, and the Signal Station, which played a key role in monitoring maritime activity during a time of heightened international tensions.

Open for tours on: 16th, 17th, 18th, 22nd, and 23rd May

This event offers a rare chance to engage with a lesser-known chapter of Britain’s history, uncovering the strategic importance of Landguard Fort during the Cold War. Whether you are passionate about history, interested in learning more about Britain’s coastal defences, or simply keen to explore a fascinating heritage site, this is an experience not to be missed.
